The French team: Henk Nooren is confident
Although he has had to review his strategy due the suspected flu epidemic, Henk Nooren, the National Selector, has a serene attitude to this first stage of the FEI Nations Cup which will take place on Friday 11th May (at 2.05 pm) at the Jumping International de France of La Baule.
This team competition represents a life-size test, three months before the London Olympics, where France, the Team Vice-World and Vice-European Champion, will be one of the favourites.
This year Kevin Staut, Michel Robert and Patrice Delaveau will not feature in the team in La Baule. "Silvana and Ornella Mail competed in the World Cup Final, so they are resting", explained Henk Nooren. "Kevin should have ridden Zeta de Hus, which is now at Michel Robert’s yard. The horses that he is riding here still need to take part in a few competitions before participating in a Nations Cup. As for Zeta, she is out of action for the moment.”
As for the last minute changes concerning the line-up of the French team, the National Selector said," We didn’t want to take any risks a few months before the Olympic Games”. "The team that will be competing on Friday in the FEI Nations Cup is a good one. Eugénie Angot, Pénélope Leprevost, Simon Delestre, Jérôme Hurel and Marc Dillasser are all very experienced. They are very talented and their horses (Old Chap Tame, Topinambour, Valentino, Ohm de Ponthual and Obiwan de Pilière) are all on the Olympic Games – WEG long list”, concluded Henk Nooren.

Precautionary measures have been taken at the CSIO 5* de France
An outbreak of equine influenza has been detected in two stud farms in Normandy by the RESPE (Réseau d’Epidémio-Surveillance en Pathologie Equine – Network for Equine Epidemiological and Pathological Surveillance).
A horse belonging to one of these farms competed in the CSI in Le Touquet last week, where it developed the beginning of a fever, the initial symptom of flu. Thus the horse left the competition to return to its stables last Friday.
Several horses (27 in total) which competed in Le Touquet are present this week at the Jumping International de France of La Baule (CSIO 5*). Although the risk of flu spreading is minimal (as all the horses are vaccinated), nevertheless it is possible. This is why the Veterinary Commission of the CSIO 5* de France has decided to take the standard precautionary measures. The horses present in Le Touquet last week have been grouped together in the same stables, so that they can be followed more easily; all the horses competing in the classes of the CSIO 5* de France of La Baule will have their temperature taken every morning and evening. If a horse developed the beginning of a fever, it would immediately be isolated and excluded from the competition.
As for the French competitors, despite the slight risks of an epidemic announced, Pascal Dubois, the National Technical Director of the FFE (French Equestrian Federation) and Henk Nooren, the FFE national selector have decided to apply the maximal precautionary measures in this Olympic year. Therefore, four of the French team’s horses initially entered in Friday’s FEI Nations Cup will not compete: Mylord Carthago*HN (Pénélope Leprevost), Lord de Theize (Olivier Guillon), Nippon d’Elle (Roger-Yves Bost) and Napoli du Ry (Simon Delestre).
The French team competing will be made up of the following rider and horse combinations:
- Eugénie Angot with Old Chap Tame
- Simon Delestre with Valentino
- Marc Dilasser with Obiwan de Pilière
- Jérôme Hurel with Ohm de Ponthual
- Pénélope Leprevost with Topinambour
Graeme Cooke, FEI Veterinary Director : “The FEI was contacted earlier this week by the veterinary advisors to the La Baule Organising Committee is satisfied that all appropriate measures have been taken at the event. FEI Veterinary Regulations require a clinical examination of all horses entering FEI events as part of a strict biosecurity policy. The Veterinary Regulations also require that all horses competing in FEI events are vaccinated against EI within the previous six months. During any FEI event the level of veterinary supervision is very high and any horse which shows any indication of infectious disease will be isolated or, if necessary, removed from the event.”

La Baule CSIO 5*: On the way to the Olympics 2012
Three months away from the London 2012 Olympics (August 2012), many riders will be dreaming of Olympic Gold... Considering the roaster for the new 2012 edition of the Jumping International of France, chances of finding the successor to Canadian rider Eric Lamaze, Gold medal at the Beijing Olympics with his famous Hickstead is more than probable.
Looking for the ideal team at the eve of the Olympics, National selectors and coaches are going to use the Jumping International of La Baule, first outdoors competition of the season to test their best riders.
Over 4 days with a program similar to the Olympic Games format, the Jumping International of France is the crossroad for all London bound teams.
Pascal Dubois, National Technical Director (FFE): "Because it is the only CSIO 5* in France, we have to honor our nation with a most experienced team in La Baule. The program for the top ten rider-horse couples in France amongst which the Olympic team will be chosen is set. According to the results obtained in La Baule, we will recompose a team which will participate to the Rome CSIO 5*, to St Gall and to Rotterdam. The FEI Nations Cup circuit is the format which comes the closest to the Olympic Games, requiring both performance but also a good team cohesion. Evidently, we are going to be very attentive to each rider's performance."
The FEI Nations Cup Circuit, also calls "Top League" will be a decisive step toward not only the French but also the other nations teams. All are fine tuning their preparation before London.
As a circuit exclusively reserved to the elite, only the top 8 nations in the world are engaged in the 2012 edition, based on their 2011 results: Germany, The Netherlands, Great-Britain, Ireland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, and Sweden.
The competition amongst these teams will take place over eight venues (including La Baule) in the following eight countries: La Baule, 10-13 May (FRA) / Rome, 24-27 May (ITA) / St Gallen, 31 May- 03 June (SWI) / Rotterdam, 20-24 June (NED) / Aachen, 03-08 July (GER) / Fasterbo, 12-15 July (SWE) / Hickstead, 19-22 July (GBR) / Dublin, 15-19 August (IRL).
For their Olympic preparation, the other world ranking teams, will take into account the FEI Promotional League as well as other 5* Grand Prix. |
